Huskies Fall in PSAC Title Game

INDIANA--The Bloomsburg University field hockey team lost to Indiana, Pa., 4-3, in overtime on Saturday in the championship game of the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.

Bloomsburg, seeking its 15th PSAC title, fell behind 2-0 in the game in the opening half of play. Liz Martini scored off a Brittany Owens assist for Indiana at the 15:28 mark, then got a Wendy Strohl goal off an assist from Kelly Yoder at 21:43.

The Huskies got on the board early in the second half when senior Ashley Heckard (Millerstown/Greenwood) scored on an assist by Chelsea Due (Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl) at 37:53. Bloomsburg tied the score at 2-2 when Due scored from an assist by Heckard at 48:25.

Indiana regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Barbara Heemelaar got an assist from Liz Marosky to go in front 3-2. Bloomsburg tied the score for the second time in the game at the 62:23 mark when Heckard scored her second goal of the game with Due getting her second assist.

In the overtime, both teams were able to get off four shots with the Huskies holding a 2-1 edge in penalty corners, but it was Brittany Owens getting the gamewinner from Barbara Heemelaar at the 82:27 mark to give the Crimson Hawks their first-ever PSAC title.

Bloomsburg falls to 18-4 on the year, while Indiana goes to 17-4. Both teams will now await word on the NCAA playoffs. Teams for the NCAA championships will be announced on Monday at 4 p.m.
